does fashion really go in a cycle?

Fashion, people say, is like earth it always circulates in the same orbit. People say what's trending now can become a thing of past in the coming decade and then it again goes on to trend in the next decade. When I was a kid I used to have these baggy bell-bottom jeans fashionable in the '90s. I used to feel really happy about buying those jeans as they were 'The jeans' to get back then, though I do not care about fashion too much these days I was small then, so I wasn't into thinking too much. They became extremely famous for some period. Everybody started rocking the bottoms until they hit the rock bottom (yes pun intended, sorry! ) when the slim fit jeans made a reentry.

Fashion is one of those things where when people like it they like it to the point of hate. This famous quirky heroine who like to change the game a little bit tries this dress made by her custom designer, who takes inspiration for oxygen. She tried it on, It seemed to look a little outlandish but not so bad looking and the designer really liked it too (obviously). She decides to wear that rather odd looking dress to an award show, as the award shows love to see celebrities unique. She goes on to wear the designer dress to the show. Thereby on the red carpet she stood showing her prized smile and the photographers gave gasps after seeing the attire and things clicked. Newsfeed got busy with her beautiful photos and with words filled with sweet compliments for her.

That is one way how trends get started. Things get stirred up a little when a big celebrity turns up onto new fashion. But not always everything clicks when a celebrity wears a distinct dress. Rather, most of the times when someone tries a new style it is not going to be adopted by masses just because it was created. There are so many trends that get discarded between being accustomed to the new trend and leaving an old trend.

There are so many disappointed designers whose grandiose dresses never took off. There may be multiple reasons on why that particular dress never took off. Many valid reasons like the dress being too much of a hassle to maintain, uncomfortable to wear and the dress sometimes venturing into the shadows it should never venture such and such. But there is one main thing that clubs all of the reasons together can be called acceptability and adaptability. A bell bottom in the '90s has become too famous because it had been accepted by the masses. They found it comfortable, easy, as a great fit and then and only then, I think, it is deemed more as a fashion statement. The same goes with the trend of tapered-slim fit jeans but here the jeans had more of a revealing nature which may have attracted the public as they have gotten bored by those baggy saggy bell-bottoms.

The adoption of fashion may feel like a cycle because people on a very general level statistically may incline towards only a few apparels that check all the boxes. The fashion that checks most of the boxes happen to be very very few in number.  Maybe the fashion being in a cycle is not in a cycle after all. There are always improvements in the design and innovations in fashion. There are so many product lines that may have been failed because of various factors. The other factor that I think fuelled the cycle concept of fashion is that people who run these apparel industries, in general, and who tend to gravitate towards old-school fashion are the old and middle-aged businessman taking a fancy to bring back their groove.
Pulling all the points together what I want to convey is that fashion revolving in a cycle could not be entirely true. I don't think people give a greater priority on whether their past fashion really trends. But what we really have to look upon is that people get bored easily and adapt to new things. The new dress happens to be the old dress because there had been nothing that innovative to topple the cycle. Once the more endured, more comfortable and better-looking dress comes from the future to the present, the past may just stay in the past.

    1. Yeah, may be it is true that people like to get back onto the old stuff because of their passion but I think this happens with the people, as I've said in the write-up, that are a little old. Generally these people (mostly corporate big names) are also on the influencial side who make the young more likely to wear, after some modern iterations, the old fashion.
